Welcome to O'Donnell Family Defense's charitable project: Hunting Legacy Initiative.
Our mission and purpose is to preserve hunting practices for multiple generations through FREE firearms and hunter safety education programs in homeschool co-ops, private, and public schools in West Michigan.

The State of Michigan has seen a steady decline in hunters for several years despite the passion for hunting in Michigan. A lost of over 200,000 hunters in the last thirty years has been reported for the state. This decline causes an unbalance in our local habitats and environments where there is an abundance of several animal populations.
To curb this decline, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources eliminated the minimum age for hunters and promoted free hunter safety classes for anyone born after 1960 taught by trained local volunteers. However, volunteers can only give so much of their time in today's economy. Many volunteer instructors hold a couple classes a year in their local area. Creating disparity in how often classes are available and where they are located.
In December of 2025, the State of Michigan passed a new law allowing hunter safety to be taught in schools once again as a elective course. Rep. Curt VanderWall of Ludington sponsored the bill saying: “In Michigan, hunting isn’t just a pastime, it’s a tradition. Protecting this sport across the state starts with training young, aspiring hunters.” At last, a new hope! Instructors, like us, were excited to get classes set up for our local schools. Despite our efforts, we were turned down by the schools.
While the new law is exciting, The State of Michigan requires DNR certified instructors to teach hunter safety education programs but schools require teaching staff to have teaching degrees. Most DNR certified instructors do not have teaching degrees as they are just volunteers from all walks of life. Some schools cited lack of funding to hire DNR certified instructors even if they could teach without a teaching degree. So, how do we provide hunter safety education programs in schools then?
Schools can authorize third party organizations to guest teach within their district where they do not hire teaching staff or provide funding for. Hunting Legacy Initiative (HLI) will match and place DNR certified instructors with West Michigan homeschool co-ops, private, and public schools who want to offer firearms and hunter safety education programs in their schools. The DNR certified instructors placed by HLI will be paid by HLI to alleviate the lack of funding many schools suffer. Thus, filling in the gaps created by well meaning legislation and the realities of our education systems.
By providing hunter safety education classes in homeschool co-ops and schools, more children will have better access to learn about ethical and safe hunting practices, firearm types, cleaning and maintenance, and safe handling. Each child who completes the hunter safety education class will receive their hunter safety certificate.
Every child who receives their hunter safety certificate is another aspiring hunter who will carry their hunting passion throughout their life and into the next generation. We are preserving and growing West Michigan's hunting legacy one class at a time.

Every dollar you donate, creates a legacy of young hunters who are ready to be successful hunters for years to come.

Do you work for a school or help coordinate a homeschool co-op and want to add firearms and hunter safety education as a class?
Send us a message!
We would love to help!

Become an HLI instructor!
Each HLI instructor must be DNR certified, teach to DNR standards, and be available for the entirety of the class semester.
Hunting Legacy Initiative is a fiscally sponsored organization of Fiscal Sponsorship Allies.
